History of the Foundation
The Zeta Phi Eta endowment fund was established in 1929 at the national convention in Syracuse, New York. To start the fund, Zeta purchased five 10-year $1,000 life insurance policies for campus chapter members. In 1940, the policies matured and the balance was invested in U. S. Savings Bonds. At each maturity date for 30 years, the money was reinvested. In recent times the funds have been invested in US equities, taxable fixed income bonds, and other assets.
The Zeta Phi Eta Foundation, established in 1955, is a non-profit corporation which derives its income from gifts from individual members, chapters, friends, bequests, and projects. At that time, the National Council voted to use the interest from the endowment fund for grants and scholarships. In 1964, the Zeta Phi Eta Foundation was recognized by the government as a 501(c)(3) corporation.
